🍹 Check my drinkHow the Keto Drink Calculator Works
Quick answer: pick each ingredient, enter the amount in ml, oz or tablespoons, and the keto drink calculator adds up net carbs and macros for the whole drink. Under 3 g net carbs is keto-friendly, 3–8 g needs planning, and more than 8 g is a carb trap.
Drinks are the easiest place to lose track of carbs: a “healthy” smoothie or a latte can carry 30 g of sugar, and liquid carbs do not fill you up the way food does. Checking the recipe first takes 20 seconds.

3 Rules for Keto Drinks
Watch the milk — lactose is sugar
Whole milk has about 5 g of carbs per 100 ml, so a 16 oz latte made with it carries roughly 15 g — most of a strict keto day. Swap to unsweetened almond milk, macadamia milk or a little heavy cream, then check your version in the calculator above.
Alcohol pauses fat burning
Vodka, gin, tequila and whiskey have zero carbs, so they will not add carbs on their own. But your liver processes alcohol first, and fat burning pauses until it is cleared. Sugary mixers are what usually break ketosis. See the full ranking in our low carb alcohol guide.
Electrolytes are non-negotiable
Keto makes your kidneys release more water, sodium and potassium; coffee and especially alcohol add to it. That is what causes the headaches and fatigue many beginners feel. Add a pinch of salt to water, eat avocado and leafy greens from our keto vegetables list, and read the electrolytes and hydration guide.

🚫 Drinks to Avoid on Keto
- Regular beer: about 13 g of carbs per 12 oz, and stouts can be higher. Pick a labeled low-carb beer instead.
- Sweet wines: Moscato, Port, Sherry and dessert wines are packed with sugar. Dry red and white wines have about 3–4 g per glass.
- Regular tonic water: as sugary as soda. Ask for diet tonic or soda water.
- Vitamin water and sports drinks: unless labeled “zero”, they are sweetened like juice.
- Oat milk: about 16 g of carbs per cup — nearly a full strict keto day.
- Juice and smoothies: the fiber is gone and the sugar stays; a cup of orange juice has about 25 g of carbs.

Keto Drinks: Frequently Asked Questions
How many carbs can a keto drink have?
On strict keto (about 20 g net carbs a day), aim for drinks under 3 g net carbs. Drinks with 3–8 g fit only if you plan the rest of the day around them, and anything over 8–10 g in one drink uses too much of your budget.
Is diet soda keto-friendly?
Yes, technically. Diet sodas have zero carbs and zero calories, so they will not break ketosis. Some people find artificial sweeteners increase sugar cravings; sparkling water with lemon or lime is a cleaner everyday choice.
Is milk keto?
Regular cow’s milk is not a great keto choice: whole milk has about 5 g of carbs (lactose) per 100 ml, so a 16 oz latte can carry about 15 g of carbs. Use unsweetened almond milk (about 0.6 g per 100 ml) or a splash of heavy cream instead.
How do I order keto coffee at Starbucks?
Order an Americano, cold brew or brewed coffee with a splash of heavy cream — not sweet cream, which contains syrup — and sugar-free syrup if you want sweetness. Skip Classic syrup, oat milk and regular whipped cream. More in our Starbucks keto drinks guide.
Will one beer ruin my ketosis?
It depends on the beer. A regular 12 oz beer has about 13 g of carbs, and stouts can have more, which is likely to push you out of ketosis. Light beers have about 2–6 g, and the lowest-carb options (Budweiser Select 55, Michelob Ultra) under 3 g.
Does alcohol stop ketosis?
Pure spirits have zero carbs, so they do not add carbs — but the liver processes alcohol first, which pauses fat burning until the alcohol is cleared. Sugary mixers are what usually break ketosis.
